The delicate drawings depict a playful world of colourful objects - objects that are ideal for a green parrot to hide behind, beside or within. Page by page you are invited to find the parrot in a game of visual hide and seek.

Wanda Zacharias studied theatre design and illustration in Munich. She worked as a photographer for the Crone Circus and the Mongolian State Circus, creating portraits of famous performers including the Russian clown Oleg Popov. She married Thomas Zacharias a German artist, professor, and art historian in 1958 and they worked together on the Green Parrot book. A circus influence can be seen throughout the illustrations, from the Parrot accompanying an acrobat on horse back to the bunting and brocade of train carriages.  Originally published in German as Der Grune Papagei in 1965 the book was translated into English via Chatto & Windus publishers in London in 1969.
