The Apple Bird
Brian Wildsmith
Second hand
First published in 1983 this beautiful series of watercolour illustrations depicts the slow munching of an apple by a rather hungry and increasingly rotund bird. Without any text the book captivates very young children and school age readers, inviting them to make up and narrate their own version of events.
The Apple Bird is part of Wildsmith's Cat on the Mat series, which feature little or no text encouraging children to begin their reading journey. You can find The Cat on The Mat, the first title in the series in our children's book section.
Brian Wildsmith was born in 1930. After National Service teaching at the Royal Military School of Music, he decided to devote his time to painting. He was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration in 1962 and has written and illustrated more than eighty books for children. The Wildsmith Museum was opened in Japan in 1994 to showcase his paintings.
