Three Little Owls
Emanuele Luzzati trans. John Yeoman
Second hand
Three Little Owls is a rhyming story by the Italian artist Emanuele Luzzati, translated by John Yeoman and with illustrations by Quentin Blake.
Three irrepressible little owls take us on their journey round the world, from one Christmas Day to the next; fishing, dancing, snoozing, and looking rather fancy wearing a giant vase as a hat.
Emanuele Luzzati was an Italian illustrator, set and stage designer and animator. He was nominated for Academy Awards for two of his short films, La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) (1965) and Pulcinella (1973). HE lived all his life in Genoa, where he was born. Following his death in January 2007 his archive was transferred to the Museo Luzzati, a 16th Century building on the port of Genoa. Among the archive was the unpublished manuscript 'Filastrocca di Natale'.
Quentin Blake is an illustrator whose work has appeared in hundreds of children's books. In 2009 Blake showed an exhibition of his illustrations at the Museo Luzzati. On the exhibition's completion he was invited to take on the task of illustrating 'Filastrocca'. His vibrant watercolours playfully enliven the manuscript translated into English by John Yeoman. Yeoman has provided the words for many of Blake's other children's books having first collaborated together in 1960.
